Miro’s sketchbook poetry

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Amazing find! An image of a sketchbook page of Joan Miro, along with a transcription of the text. Which reminds me of my trip to Barcelona this year (Miro’s museum on photo below; the colors thanks to the slides and not PS-ed!).

In clockwise order:

woman on a beach, this
figure is too realistic, make
use of symbols-signs-
to interpret it, like in 1940

in the face violently red cheeks
like those of a cheap doll

white background

in some spots, like the head, make use of a very violent black contour

this cloud is too realistic. interpret the clouds with
the poetic symbols of 1940. so that these canvases have
a “fauve” spirit, but within the poetic (field) so that
they recall in a certain way the good canvasses by matisse.
but going beyond them and more furiously “fauve”.

the color of the
figure can perfectly,
in some places, be that
of the background

black line will be
separated from color
by a band of
canvass not filled-in

in some spots
reinforce black line

for the background
put color directly
on canvas and spread
it with hand, rag, fist,
sponge, and so forth

Although I’m not a huge fan of such sophisticated, choreographed and candy-like photography, it is really impressive how this guy feels the light.

The world’s largest camera

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Photographer Shaun Irving and his cameratruck project: an ultra-large format camera built from a delivery van which means it’s the world’s largest traveling camera. With this old mail truck purchased via eBay and lenses from old military surplus and a submarine periscope Shaun Irving travels around taking large-format photos that are not just stylish and intriguing but also 3,000(!) times bigger than the typical 35mm negative.

Below a few additional facts about The Cameratruck and its operator:
Aperture is set with a piece of scrap paper
Shutter is made of a cardboard box (!)
Developing rig consists of two buckets, a sponge and a garden hose (and developer, of course).
Other than the basic setup the process of an average Cameratruck shot also includes test prints before final exposure and takes about half an hour.
To take a photo, Irving stands inside the truck “fumbling around in the dark.”

Lina Scheynius

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

It has been a long time since the work of a photographer has moved me deeply, but this was worth waiting for. Lina Scheynius shoots perfect delicate images of human relationships (mostly erotic). Beauuutiful!

Wisdom Book

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Inspired by the idea that wisdom is the greatest gift one generation can pass to another Andrew Zuckerman interviewed, photographed and filmed 50 of the world’s great writers, actors, artists, designers, politicians, musicians and religious and business leaders of our time – people who have all made their mark in the world. He posed seven questions to each of his subjects—all over 65 years of age—and their answers offer inspirational perspectives and unique insights. They were all photographed without their natural context to make the answers more universal and enable dialog between them. I want this book, I want this book!

Yearbook yourself!

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

This tool totally made my day today!

On the site Yearbook Yourself you can download your picture and see yourself with typical haircuts and outfits through the decades. Really wonderful! Enjoy.

Me in the 60′ — like a real The Beatles fan!

Me in the 70′ — Jimmy Hendrix haircut…

Me in the 80′ — my favorite, perfect embodiment of kitsch! Love it!

Röntgen etchings

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

This man goes even further: Dutch artist Ben Kruisdijk makes drawings on x-ray images. Kruisdijk was a student at the academy when he took his first experiments with Röntgen photos and by now his photos can be described as “drawing x-ray photography hybrids” or as he calls them “Röntgen Etchings”.
They are very expressive, sometimes horrible, and include tumors, broken bones and the like, but also fantastic animal hand drawings.
